I discovered that David Crockett State Park and the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail are a 2-fer so I decided to activate them. Let's get radio-active with a POTA activation! I'll share some ham radio lingo along the way. This was a really fun activation with 43 contacts using 20w and a hamstick! Here's the lingo I covered in the video. This is by no means exhaustive nor is it meant to offend anyone. It's simply what you might hear on the air. What's missing? Leave a comment and let me know! Boat anchor - a really old radio, likely an old tube radio, compared to today's modern solid state radios 807 vacuum tube - several inches tall and round, not unlike a beer R2D2 - artifact-sounding digital voice Purple Crystal Award - timed out the repeater Reading the mail - listening to a conversation taking place without participating in it Elmer - ham radio speak for a mentor "Put more fire in the wire" - increase power or perhaps add an amplifier to your signal Hi Hi - laughing without laughing Eyeball QSO - a converation in person QSO (also pronounced CUE-SO)- a conversation or contact on the radio QSL - confirm or acknowledge OM -Old Man YL - Young Lady XYL - wife of an OM Here are some I didn't have time for in the video: 73 - best wishes QLF - sending CW with your left foot QRB - Do you want to run the bands (make contacts on other bands in a contest) CQ Test - short for contest, not test Picket fence - kind of a fluttering sound on someone's transmission I'll be clear on your final - you are essentially saying goodbye and will be done transmitting after hearing theother person's final transmission Silent Key - a ham that has passed away Affiliate Links If you dig the channel, please consider buying me a coffee on my Ko-Fi page.
